Volunteering

Why Should I Become a Volunteer?

Little League Baseball and Softball is an organization designed to build good citizens. It is a program of leadership, preparing today's youth to be tomorrow's leaders. Rockford Little League relies on a devoted legion of adult volunteers to help ensure that the organization remains structured and runs smoothly. RLL is always looking for responsible and enthusiastic individuals to support and coordinate Little League events and activities. As a volunteer, you should have a keen interest in the safety, well-being, and overall development of children. By reading further, you will discover that the benefits of volunteering are endless. You will also gain a better understanding of why you should become involved, who volunteers are, what you can do, and how you can sign up.

Who Can Volunteer?

Anyone can apply to become a volunteer. Whatever talents or skills you have, we can use them! Across the country, volunteers are grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, retirees, community leaders, former Little Leaguers, friends, neighbors, and more. Any community member who wishes to become a volunteer may apply.

All parents of children involved in Rockford Little League are strongly encouraged to volunteer. As a parent volunteer, you have the opportunity to spend quality time with your child in a safe, fun-filled environment. Oftentimes, parent and child social lives parallel each other. Volunteering allows your life and your child's life to intersect on common ground, with shared interests and goals.

On rare occasions, Little League, through District Administrators and your local Board of Directors, may deny individuals the privilege of volunteering for reasons, past or present, that may be detrimental to the positive development of young people, other volunteers, and/or Little League International. When you apply to become a volunteer, you give the local Little League organization the right to conduct necessary background checks.

How Do I Become A Volunteer?

Fill out our volunteer application available online and the bottom of our registration page.  All adult volunteers who have regular contact with our players must go through a background check.

What Can I Volunteer To Do?

No experience is required to become a volunteer. Most of the volunteer opportunities require little or no training. Rockford Little League will provide you with any necessary training (as well as support and encouragement), as they deem necessary. The best volunteers are those who are able to bring added enjoyment to the game simply by being themselves. What you see during Little League games is a mere fraction of what you can do as a volunteer. You can volunteer to help in virtually any aspect of Little League Baseball or Softball!

The Rockford Little League relies heavily on volunteers to help serve the Little League community. Without volunteers, we simply could not function. Each year, volunteers assist us both publicly and privately and we greatly appreciate their assistance. Here are just some of the ways you to can help your community Little League:

  • Board members
  • Sponsors
  • Managers/Coaches
  • Umpires
  • Field Maintenance
  • Concession Stand
  • Fundraising
  • Team Parents

Concession Stand

This is probably our most difficult area to find consistent reliable assistance throughout the season. However, this is our largest area of opportunity to raise funds for the Little League. We ask each coach to find parental volunteers to help out at the concession stand during various games throughout the season. If you are willing to volunteer or if you have a teenage son or daughter looking for some summer employment experience, please contact Kris Herblet at 616.874.8631.

Field Maintenance

The field maintenance volunteers are the unsung heros of the Little League. They work behind the scene making sure the fields are in optimal condition for our players and coaches each and every day. It can take the form of simply helping coaches store equipment/bases after the last game, helping to prep the field after an unexpected storm, or helping out with repair maintenance. If you are willing to volunteer or if you have a teenage son or daughter looking for some summer experience, please contact a board member to see how you can be of assistance.

Team Parent

Team parents are a coaches dream. They help out with coordination of team snacks, helping coaches carry and stow equipment before and after games. They help out with coordination of any team activites, organization in the dugout, and team spirit. Any helpful assitance you can provide to the coaches is very much appreciated. Please contact your child's team coach for ways in which you may be of assistance.

Other

You can assist us by volunteering in other areas as well:

As a field cleanup volunteer for your team's coach (raking fields after games, putting bases away)
As a grounds keeper -- helping us keep the RLL facilities clean and free of refuse
As a general tasks volunteer (building coaching binders, helping at signup, equipment handout, equipment return, player assessments, etc...)
